Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), the world summit on smart cities and urban solutions organized by Fira de Barcelona, will once again bring together the world of urban innovation in person to celebrate the event's tenth anniversary. From November 16th to 18th, with more than 400 exhibitors and 300 speakers, and under the slogan "We are the cities we make", the expo and congress will reflect on the transformation that metropolises are experiencing after the pandemic and the need to adapt cities to the needs of its citizens even more than before.
The event will bring together leading international experts and companies to share knowledge and address the multiple challenges of urban transformation. To cover all the fields involved, the congress program is structured around eight thematic axes (Technologies, Energy and Environment, Mobility, Governance, Life and Inclusion, Economy, Infrastructures and Buildings, and Security and Protection), and will address topics such as Artificial Intelligence , Digital Twins, new energy models, green spaces, low carbon, micro mobility and shared mobility, Citizen participation, Critical infrastructures, Ethics and Privacy in the City, and Urban security and emergencies.
The director of the Smart City Expo World Congress, Ugo Valenti, has stated that “the 2021 edition, in the current international context, will surely be one of the most special editions. We will celebrate our tenth anniversary and we will do so by bringing the entire urban innovation ecosystem together again”. Valenti adds that “the last few months have changed the priorities of most cities and it is time to reflect on these changes and tackle a new stage. We have always been proud and privileged to contribute to the transformation of cities around the world, but now more than ever”.
Urban solutions are a critical element of the smart city ecosystem, and the 400 exhibiting companies will showcase their latest products and technologies. These companies include Abertis Mobility Solutions, Cisco, City Possible by Mastercard, FCC Environment, Huawei, Microsoft, Motorola, Seat, Smart Ports: Piers of the Future and Ubiwhere. Also, many cities and countries will showcase their recent projects and initiatives, including those in Germany, Argentina, Austria, Barcelona, Belgium, Berlin, Brazil, Buenos Aires, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Estonia, Finland, France, The Hague, Holland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Paris, Poland, Sweden and the United States, among others.
UCLG World Council
SCEWC will also host the annual meeting of the Organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the largest global network of cities and local, regional and metropolitan governments. UCLG will meet its World Council in Barcelona, under the title "Smart Cities and Territories, Pillars of the Common Agenda" to define the strategy of the municipal movement and its contribution to the UN Common Agenda. The World Council is made up of 342 representatives from 97 countries of the world. The meetings usually gather around 500 participants and in 2021 it will have a hybrid component, with sessions both physical in Barcelona and online.
Materials and mobility of the future
Collaboration between industry sectors has been one of SCEWC's priorities since its inception. The 2021 edition will strengthen the role of the event as a global platform for the exchange of knowledge and expand its scope by hosting two new events: Tomorrow.Mobility and PUZZLE X. Tomorrow.Mobility will focus on promoting the design and adoption of new mobility models sustainable urban. The event is co-organized by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, a body of the European Union, and has the support of important companies and institutions. Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress wants to become the world benchmark in this field and go beyond a single event, since the project includes the creation of an online knowledge platform active throughout the year and an innovation center established in Barcelona that bring together the major players in the industry.
For its part, PUZZLE X aims to capture the potential of Frontier materials to solve some of the challenges facing society. The initiative includes an annual event and business incubator to support Materials Deep Tech startups, attract investment and build a global ecosystem. Advanced and border materials, include quantum materials, low-dimensional materials, 2D materials such as graphene, advanced materials and smart composites, have a great impact in industries such as Energy, Mobility, Health, Transportation, Construction, Electronics, Textile and Connectivity , among others.
